Downright Excellent Event

On Saturday 18th March, committee members June, Tripat and Sarita visited the charity ‘Downright Excellent (DEx)’ armed with their giant teeth and toothbrushes.

DEx runs weekend sessions for families with children with Down syndrome, offering things such as speech and occupational therapy. We were invited by them to deliver general oral health advice to the parents and allow the children to interact and familiarise themselves with the role of a dentist.

The children loved playing with the toothbrushes and dressing up in aprons and masks and it was great to see that so many of them were already comfortable with the dentist.

This is so important, especially in these children who have very specific oral health needs, so it is vital that they regularly visit the dentist from a very young age. We also gave advice and answered many questions from parents.

Working with special needs children was certainly very different to our usual school visits and we thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic experience. We have been invited back by DEx and so we hope to allow more members to participate in our future events with them. We are looking forward to it!
